Here it is October already. We are starting our third month into the Stake "get your food storage" challenge. We canned sugar, got at least one can of either powdered eggs or powdered egg whites and now this month, we are working on tomatoes and vital wheat gluten. There is so much you can do with tomato powder that would be amazed and vital wheat gluten can help with any thing you make with wheat and flour.
October food storage tips:
Tomatoes: a basic ingredient in many meals. Fresh tomatoes are more
nutritious than eating an apple a day, they are loaded with vitamins and have
as much fiber as a slice of whole wheat bread. Tomatoes have cancer fighting
properties which are actually enhanced by cooking them. The amount to store per
year depends on personal/family use. You can use tomato powder to make sauce, paste and even ketchup.
Vital Wheat Gluten: is made from the protein in wheat. Can purchase
ready-to-use vital wheat gluten to help lift whole grain breads, and for making
a meat substitute.
Tomato Powder is made from the sweetest tomatoes to
make a rich tomato paste that’s full of flavor. Whether you’re making
homemade pizza, spaghetti, or anything that calls for tomato paste,
Honeyville Tomato Powder will not disappoint. The taste is great, and
the nutritional food value is preserved. Honeyville Tomato Powder is an
ideal product for long term food storage and emergency preparedness.
Shelf-Life: Tomato Powder will store for 10 to 15
years in a sealed #10 can (oxygen absorber included) under ideal storage
conditions (cool, dry place).
Instructions: Blend 2 tablespoons tomato powder with ¼ cup water. Blend until desired thickness is achieved.
Uses: Tomato Powder can be used separately or in
combination with soups, casseroles, pizzas, pastas and more. May also be
used as a thickening agent.
Vital Wheat Gluten can be used to greatly improve
bakery products. It is the gluten in wheat flour that is responsible for
the unique features of bread,
which are not possible with other cereal flours. It is a concentrated
protein that possesses a special visco-elastic property. As a functional
protein, vital wheat gluten
provides additional qualities to the dough when used in baked goods.
Wheat flour contains some natural gluten but often not to the extent
desired. Many baked goods benefit from the addition
of wheat gluten. The effect on the bread is remarkable. Honeyville Vital
Wheat Gluten is an ideal product for long term food storage and
emergency preparedness.
Shelf-Life: Vital Wheat Gluten will store for 7 to
10 years in a sealed #10 can (oxygen absorber included) under ideal
storage conditions (cool, dry place). Once
opened, it has an average shelf life of 6 to 12 months.
Instructions: Depending on the quality of the
flour, the recommended usage is between 3% and 5% of the total weight of
the required amount of flour.
Uses: Vital Wheat Gluten can be used in any recipe calling for flour, including breads, muffins, croissants and more.
Watch for our great up and coming recipes using tomato powder and vital wheat gluten.
Have fun with your food storage.
